Rectal and colon cancer result from changed mucosal cells in the bowels. This type of cancer is a malign disease of the digestive tract like stomach cancer, and it occurs a lot more frequently than e.g. anal cancer.
Risk factors of rectal cancer: factors related to nutrition and environment, genetic factors. The exact cause is yet unknown. This cancer mostly affects people 40 years of age and older. It is important to detect the cancer early in order to prevent it from spreading by forming metastases in other organs. Else, liver cancer, gall bladder cancer or lung cancer may occur additionally.
Symptoms of rectal/colon cancer: The symptoms can be very different and unspecific: weight loss, lack of appetite, fatigue, diarrhoea, constipation. The higher up in the colon the tumor is the less pronounced are the symptoms.
Early detection of rectal/colon cancer: you should always see a doctor when there are traces of blood or mucus in the stool, especially when also the frequency of bowel movements has changed. The annual medical check-up includes a test for blood in stool for patients 40 years of age and over.
